Jawbone, originally known for their Bluetooth headsets, have partnered with American Express and turned their fitness tracker into a NFC mobile payments wallet.
Now you can party all night and leave/lose your wallet and mobile phone somewhere yet still catch a taxi home or pick up a few items at the store.
The payments are made using near-field communication (NFC). The same technology behind the Pay-Wave cards, various smartphones and the Apple Watch. You simply tap your wristband on the payment terminal and grab your swag.
Currently you can only pair your American Express card with the Jawbone UP4 but I really can’t see Visa sitting on the sidelines with this. They will partner with another fitness tracker in the very near future.
On the fitness tracker itself, you get a water-resistant (10m or 33 ft) device capable of the usual things like day and night monitoring as well as adding bio-impedance sensors for heart rate, respiration and sweat monitoring. A 100 minute charge will last you 7 days. You can pick one up sometime around August-September for US$200.
